BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 23, 2009 – Wilma
Salas scored six of her 14 points in the
tie-breaker inspiring Cuba to complete a
sensational comeback to defeat United States and
remain unbeaten in Pool B of the NORCECA Women’s
Continental Championship with 2-0 record. The
score was 19-25, 16-25, 25-16, 28-26, 15-10.
The Cubans outmatched their opponents 14-7 in
the blocking category and came out victors
despites committing 44 errors compared to 21 by
the losers.
Nancy Carrillo led Cuba with 23 points including
5 blocks. Kenia Carcaces added 17 and Yanelis
Santos contributed 4 blocks among her 16
tallies. Americans Nancy Metcalf and Jordan
Larson had 16 and 14 points respectively.
“It was a tough match and I think we were lucky
today,” said Luis Oviedo, the coach of Cuba.
“The matches between these two teams are always
very tough and today it was not different.”
“We were anxious at the start but after the
third set we played almost perfect,” said
Yusidey Silie, the Captain of Cuba.
“We can learn a lot from tonight and I hope we
can meet Cuba again and make the adjustments we
need to make,” said Hugh McCutcheon, the coach
of USA.
